Brief description of the degree course
Caratteristiche e finalità
Il corso fornisce una preparazione con forti caratteristiche di interdisciplinarietà fra le discipline chimiche e quelle fisiche che sono richieste oggi dalle più moderne applicazioni dei materiali in un numero sempre crescente di settori tecnologici avanzati.
In particolare il laureato sarà in grado di utilizzare e di contribuire allo sviluppo di materiali che siano caratterizzati da specifiche funzioni. In questo senso la preparazione del laureato in Scienza dei materiali si differenzia da quella in Ingegneria dei materiali che è invece più rivolta alla padronanza dei processi produttivi e di impiego di materiali con specifiche proprietà meccaniche e strutturali.
Il percorso formativo si presenta suddiviso in due fasi. La prima fase è dedicata alla preparazione di base nelle discipline chimiche generali, inorganiche e organiche, nella fisica classica e nella matematica. La seconda fase è invece rivolta all’insegnamento delle discipline specifiche della scienza dei materiali, con particolare riferimento alla fisica e alla chimica quantistica, alla fisica dello stato solido, alla cristallografia e alla struttura dei solidi, alla chimica dello stato solido e della chimica organica con elementi introduttivi di biochimica. In questa fase è concentrata la maggior parte delle attività di laboratorio, che costituiscono parte fondamentale della preparazione dello scienziato dei materiali. Un corso specifico di scienza dei materiali introduce alle principali classi di materiali (metalli, semiconduttori, materiali polimerici, vetri, ceramici…) e ha lo scopo di introdurre le conoscenze fondamentali delle tecnologie e dei processi produttivi specifici.

Ambiti occupazionali
Il laureato in Scienza dei materiali può svolgere attività di tecnico di alto livello presso industrie anche con elevato contenuto tecnologico. I materiali con specifiche proprietà trovano impiego nella industria microelettronica come in quella meccanica o delle materie plastiche, nella industria aerospaziale come in quella ottica e perfino nei trattamenti delle superfici di materiali per la gioielleria. In tutti questi campi la conoscenza solida della chimica e della fisica della materia consente al laureato di svolgere compiti di gestione e di ottimizzazione dei processi e di identificazione di nuove possibili soluzioni ai problemi di sviluppo di prodotto.

Il corso dà accesso diretto al corso di laurea magistrale in Scienza dei materiali.
