Syllabus
Prerequisites: basic knowledges in:
- phisical geography
- human geography
- geography of Italy
- didactics
- Developmental psychology (3-6 and 6-10)
Target skills and knowledge: This course aims to develop knowledges, abilities and competences usuful to teach efficaciously geography for children age 3-10.
It is divided into two parts:
A – Basics: at the end of this module students will know the theoretical framework of geography. The aim is to acquire the fundamental knowledge of geography necessary to set up teaching.
B – DIDACTICS: at the end of this module students will be able to organize and carry out an effective didactics of geography in nursery school and primary school.

1 Knowledge and ability of understanding
1a - Knowledge of the theoretical bases of the geography (principal phases of the geographical scientific evolution, epistemology, practices of the research, themes and contemporary problems)(main phases of its historical evolution, epistemological, conceptual and methodological bases, topics and problems)
1b - Knowledge of the basic concepts and methods of geography useful to plan didactics and to build the sense of the space for the children (3-6 and 6-10 years old) according to the National Indications and to the international documents on geography.

2 Knowledge and ability of applied understanding
2a - to choose correctly the projects lines of the geographical activities ( age 3-6 and 6-10 )
2b - to choose the most suitable tools to appraise the reported learnings to the space in the nursery and primary schools

3 - autonomy of judgment
3a - to acquire the ability to analyze facts and phenomena from the geographical point of view in a critical way, considering the ethical components and values.
3b - to acquire the ability to analyze critically the planned activities of didactics of the geography individualizing potentiality, critical points and to find better solutions;
3c -to acquire the ability to auto-appraise his/her own knowledges and disciplinary and educational competences from the geographical point of view.

4 Communication abilities
4a - to be able to use the specific terms related to the geography and to the didactics of geography.
4b - to be able to interact with colleagues of other disciplines on common themes with the purpose to build interdisciplinary projects.
4c - to be able to communicate to other subjects (parents, professionists in the extra-scholastic contexts etc.) the effect curricular choices.

5 Abilities to learn
5a - to be able to continue to update the geographical knowledges referred to contexts and scientific topics.
5b - to be able to find sources, materials and useful tools to sustain an high quality of geography teaching.
Examination methods: Written exam (open questions and multiple choice questions)
Assessment criteria: The evaluation is on a scale of 30. It considers: knowledge, ability to communicate in a clear way, proper use of geographical terminology, spelling and syntax.

- the main paradigms characterizing the historical evolution of the geographical science.
- geographical concepts: environment, landscape, place, space, territory, region.
- Geography and geographies: concepts, topics/problems, geographical areas.

- National and International Geographical Associations.
- Geography and other sciences.
- Geography and Didactics of geography

B – DIDACTICS
- The educational value of geographical knowledge
- The curriculum according to the dispositions of law
- The didactic design of geographical knowledge
- The didactic use of the main tools and sources of/for geography
- Field trips for geographical education
- Professional updating
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Interactive lessons, experts meeting, group work, seminars, excursions, case reports, visual analysis.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Bibliography and lessons are in Italian.

During the lessons it will be possible to access materials in other languages, i.e. articles of “J-Reading - Journal of Research and Didactics in Geography” – and the International Charter on Geographical Education .
