Syllabus
Prerequisites: Main contents of the history of architecture. Elementary techniques of representation.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to lead students towards an in-depth theoretical and practical experience of architectural design, considering both the specific and the collateral aspects of this discipline, as well as the relations with other disciplines. In the integral project approach the architectural planner is also coordinatore of other specialistic planning activities. At the end of the experience students will have to prove mastery of all the options (typological, technological, structural, systemic) and to bring them all to a unique coherent significant meaning.
Examination methods: Intermediate tests and final examination.
Assessment criteria: Test with respect to the contents of lectures: ability to analyze and clarity of exposition. Test with respect to the design experience: relevance to the theme, development of project proposals, representation readability and order.
Course unit contents: The architectural project as expressive synthesis of resources (language), restrictions (context), objectives (user). The graphic sign and its logic correspondence with the reality. Readability, complexity and simplicity, symmetry and asymmetry in the definition of the shape. The modular grid. True and False in the historicity of the functional conversion and the inclusion of the new in the existing (additions, extensions). New architecture in urban context of historical value.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is composed of three parts: lectures, exercises and lab. In lessons is placed the focus on the aspects of the project through the study of some exemplary architectural works. In the context of the exercise the characteristics of the environment identified for the purposes of the laboratory activities are studied in depht. The laboratory, with which the course is completed, consists in the development of an architectural project in which the relationship with the environment is particularly important.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Notes from lectures, architecture magazines, architecture monographs.
