Prerequisites: In order to successfully attend the course "Architectural and Urban Composition III and laboratory," which is the last compulsory exam of the Architecture and Urban Design area, it is necessary to have already attended the compulsary courses up to the third year and preferably have passed the examinations.
In particular, although not strictly prescribed, the knowledge and skills acquired in the following courses are considered fundamental: Architectural and Urban Composition I and II and laboratories; History of Contemporary Architecture; Technical Architecture I.
Students enrolled in the course will be expected to know the main architectural currents of the last century, and the main theoretical references of Architectural Composition.
Students are required a good capacity of global analysis of compositional, distributive and structural functioning of a not complex building; this is considered a prerequisite to be able to deal with more complex buildings and urban contexts.
Students enrolled in the course must be able to critically analyze and represent the architecture that will be proposed as study reference.
Target skills and knowledge: Aims of the course are acquiring and developing the knowledge of theory, technique and tools of architectural design for complex buildings, related to the functional program and the articulation of spaces; improvement of theoretical and methodological aspects, with particular attention to the theory of the design in contemporary age, and composition techniques regarding the organizational logics, and formal aggregation, according to which the building is defined in elements and parts and relates to the context.
The continuous reference to the project is the technical basis of a guided path, which aims to awareness and understanding of the problems that characterize the main topics of the design. Control of the architectural project, with particular reference to the design concepts, concerning the logical criteria for the definition of the various elements and parts of the building, suitably related to the context.
Examination methods: The final exam consists in a critical discussion of the exercises held during the course, with particular reference to the design choices, the methodologies used, the congruence of the different technical and formal aspects. The exposition of the theoretical basis of the discipline, covered during the course, aims to assess the level of knowledge and level of awareness reached by the student.
The work carried out will be represented in about 3 to 4 A0 size boards, a 1:500 scale model, a 1:200 scale model, a video or a powerpoint presentation.
Assessment criteria: The final assessment will take into account the following parameters:
a) interest and engagement shown during the laboratory work and contribution to the debate of the topics;
b) architectural quality of the final project and check the consistency between form, function, structure.
c) ability to relate their work to contemporary architectural culture design;
d) ability to relate with the city, using architectural design tools.
e) ability to provide effective representation of the project and the process of composition, with the appropriate graphical tools.
Course unit contents: Didactics has as working tool, rather than objective, the project of a complex public or collective building, appropriately simplified, of which the student must control the process of formal definition at different scales, in relation to the techniques and materials, the functional program, the main constraints used.
The project required the students will be located in suburban areas of the city of Padua. The areas have characters of unacknowledgement, disclaimer or margin: themes that follow a specific research area - regeneration, recycling and valorization of elements and spaces of the city - that constitute the field of analysis of several Italian universities.
The student will be provided an abacus of architectural archetypes (eg, the plate, the tower or the excavation) from which he must develop the project.
Looking to a repertory of tradition, which considers the building as an expression of formal principles, it will set the stage for a theoretical reflection, aimed to the development of critical categories of design criteria for a correct design approach.
The purposed theme will allow to develop logical reasoning, beyond the architectural design of the single building, extending the definition of urban public spaces at different scales. Particular attention will be given to the continuous monitoring of the technique, typological, formal congruence of the many aspects which are included in architectural synthesis and the consistency of the relationship of the building with the context.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course activity lasts about twelve weeks. Each week features a theme specific in content and methods of conducting the activity.
Each theme will be developed through lectures, surveys and insights, carried out in form of laboratory and checked in every phase of development.
Students will be divided into groups, each of which will focus to a single theme.
The work will be carried out mainly in the classroom. Several intermediate tests are provided, through collective discussion of the drawings produced during the work. Key part of the learning process is the collective review of the exercises.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Training materials in order to support the course consists of:
- information and documentary sheets related to the architecture shown during the lessions (containing text, images, references, links to websites)
- Explanatory texts of the exercises.
- Graphic schemes to support the conduct of the exercises
- Rules for the drafting of the drawings and manual, as well as digital.
The materials will be available in paper and / or digital, before the beginning and the proper conduct of the individual exercises.
