Syllabus
Prerequisites: Microeconomics. Basic notions of optimization are useful.
Target skills and knowledge: This is a basic course in Industrial Organization, which is the study of imperfectly competitive markets. The objective of the course is to provide students with the tools needed to understand and interpret the decisions that a firm has to take in a competitive environment and the consequences of these decisions on the social welfare.
Examination methods: Written exam, made of 4 exercises + 2 theoretical questions.
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated on the basis of their capacity of:
- modelling the given problem;
- solving the model;
- providing an economic interpretation to the result of the problem;
- understanding the economic significance of the models studied during the course.
Course unit contents: - What is Industrial Organization.
- Review of basic notions in microeconomics.
- Monopoly.
- Game Theory: basic equilibrium concepts.
- Oligopoly: quantity competition, price competition, sequential competition.
- Collusion.
- Non-price competition: product differentiation.
- Anticompetitive strategies and entry deterrence.
- Contractual relations among firms: mergers.
- Advertisement (a glimpse).
- Research and Development (R&D) and patents (a glipmse).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Methodology: traditional lectures.
There will be 4 practical lectures devoted to solving exercises and one lecture given by a member of the Italian Antitrust Authority.
