Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course in English-Italian Specialised Translation 1 requires a C1/C1+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) in the five skills - reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation - as learning outcome at the end of the first year of the graduate degree course in languages. It also presupposes good, systematic knowledge of English linguistics, ranging from phonetics and phonology through morphosyntax to semantics both at a theoretical and at an applied level.
Examination methods: Knowledge and skills acquired in the course in English-Italian Specialised Translation 1 will be assessed through a final test on the different activities carried out during the course and a translation portfolio each student will hand in at the end of the simulations. Given the relevance of acquiring methods and procedures in translation/interpreting where the student is at the centre of learning and is required to learn by doing, attending lectures regularly is highly recommended.
Course unit contents: Written professional translation concerns English texts translated into Italian while oral intercultural communication includes translation both from and into Italian and English. Topics reflect area-specific activities, with special reference to science and technology. More and more difficult authentic texts will help students to perform in a context that is as close as possible to real-life professional translation today. Empowering students to handle lexis, terminology, syntax and the sociolinguistics of texts professionally will require learning the theory and the methods of lexico-semantics, terminology, syntax and phraseology.
