Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course in English-Italian Specialised Translation 2 requires a C1+ level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) in the five skills - reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation - as learning outcome at the end of the first year of the master's degree course in languages. It also presupposes in-depth, systematic knowledge of English linguistics, ranging from phonetics and phonology through morphosyntax to semantics both at a theoretical and at an applied level.
Examination methods: Knowledge and skills acquired in the course in English-Italian Specialised Translation 2 will be assessed through a final test on the different activities carried out during the course and a translation portfolio each student will hand in at the end of the simulations. Given the relevance of acquiring methods and procedures in translation/interpreting where the student is at the centre of learning and is required to learn by doing, attending lectures regularly is highly recommended.
Course unit contents: Written professional translation concerns English texts translated into Italian while oral intercultural communication includes translation both from and into Italian and English. Topics reflect area-specific activities, with special reference to economics and law. More and more difficult authentic texts will help students to perform in a context that is as close as possible to real-life professional translation today. Empowering students to handle lexis, terminology, syntax and the sociolinguistics of texts professionally will require learning the theory and the methods of lexico-semantics, terminology, syntax and phraseology.
