Course unit contents: Literature at War

This course introduces texts which deal with modern war and warfare, be they real or imaginary, from the very late Victorian ‘martian invasion’ text proposed by HG Wells, to a few poems written by some of the British poets-soldiers of the First World War. We’ll later move to Graham Greene’s Ministry of Fear, a novel dealing with the Blitz and the devastation brought to the city of London by the Second World War and the Nazi attempts at invading Britain. Our last text is the very famous post-war novel by William Golding, Lord of the Flies, which is haunted by fears of cold and nuclear wars.
