Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students are expected to know major processes in Cell Biology, Physiology, Immunology and General Pathology (cell death, inflammation, oncology).
Examination methods: Written examination (open answer test). Additional evaluation will be summed to the credit acquired with the regular examination, on voluntary basis, for the reading and presentation of a research article from the literature.

Hypersensitivity reactions (type I-IV according to Gell and Coombs classification).
Transplantation immunology and transplant rejection.
Primary and secondary immunodeficiencies
Vaccination, vaccines and adjuvants
In vivo molecular imaging

General Pathology (CFU: 4) (Prof. L. Gorza)
Cellular adaptive responses: molecular aspects of hypertrophy and atrophy (Cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy. Muscular dystrophies).

Cell death: New type of cell death: regulated necrosis. Divergent effects of the cell stress-response (cytoprotection and increased apoptosis in atherosclerosis). Pharmacological intervention on cellular chaperones.

Quality control of protein folding: when and how to manipulate it. Protein misfolding diseases. Cystic fibrosis. Amyloidosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

Molecular pathology of diabetes and insulin resistance. Obesity and mechanisms of food intake regulation

Tissue inflammation and repair: how to interfere with inflammasomes and fibrosis.
