Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students must know the structure of DNA, RNA and protein, the concept of the genome and the fundamentals of biochemistry
Examination methods: Final oral exam.
Course unit contents: The course covers topics that concern both the chemical characterization of proteins and the study of a proteome. In particular are presented techniques ranging from the analysis of a protein fingerprinting and sequence determination by Edman degradation, to the separation of complex mixtures of proteins by 2D-electrophoresis and multi-dimensionalchromatography. A large part of the course is dedicated to the mass spectrometry of proteins. The main techniques of mass spectrometry and mass-mass of proteins are presented, both from the point of view of the theoretical aspects from that of interpretation of mass spectra.
Another topic addressed is bioinformatics in proteomics. As specific applications of mass spectrometry will face the determinations of post-translational modifications. Finally, topics such as analysis of chemical modifications of proteins, Quantitative Proteomics,Functional Proteomics are also treated.
