Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of signals and systems and transmission.
Examination methods: Four homeworks will be assigned, which need the use of Matlab, and a final exam at the end of the course.
Course unit contents: Signal and system analysis: baseband and passband (baseband equivalent model) digital transmission systems, Wiener filter and linear prediction, spectral estimation methods. Adaptive transversal filters: LMS and RLS algorithms. Radio link: baseband and discrete time equivalent models, random models, simulation models. Transmission over dispersive channels: intersymbol interference (ISI), Nyquist criterion for the absence of ISI, performance evaluation in the presence of ISI. Equalization: linear and non linear (cancelation based). Optimum data detection in dispersive channels: Viterbi and forward-backward algorithms. Synchronization: timing and carrier phase recovery, many practical methods. Multicarrier systems (OFDM): architecture, orthogonality conditions, performance and efficient implementation.
