Syllabus
Prerequisites: PLEASE NOTE: this course (9 credits) is offered to students of the Master Course in Environmental Engineering. Students belonging to the Bachelor Course in Ingegneria Chimica e dei Materiali can attend the same course for 6 credits only (corso mutuato). At the beginning of the course these students will be informed about the topics to fulfill the 6 credits.

All students attending this course are required to know about fluid transport (pumps, fans, compressors), heat transfer (heat exchangers), applied thermodynamics of one-component systems, chemical kinetics, and to have a knowledge of water pollution phenomena.
Examination methods: 1. Homework. The students of Environmental Engineering, in teams of 3-4 people, are assigned the analysis of an existing wastewater treatment plant and are requested to produce a short report on it. The discussion of this report is a prerequisite to be admitted to the written examination.

2. Written examination. It includes both a numerical exercise and two theoretical questions. Maximum scores are 15 for the exercise, and 15 for the two theoretical questions. In order to pass the exam it is needed to get at least 8/15 in the exercise.

Final score. Both the homework and the written examination are evaluated with two scores (base: 30). The overall score is the weighted average of these two scores (weight 1/3 for the homework and 2/3 for the written exam)
Course unit contents: Water consumption, pollution sources and wastewater treatment in both urban and industrial sites.
Chemical and biological reactor engineering.
Process reactors with respect to water purification.
Biological, physical and physico-chemical wastewater treatments. Sludge treatment technologies.
Sizing and rating of biological treatment processes and plants.
