Syllabus
Prerequisites: Mathematics and base statistics.

Main concepts about cartography and topography about cartographic reference systems: Datum, UTM, WGS84, geoid, ellipsoid, etc...

Basic computer science skills to install software, to import and to export digital data.
Examination methods: The student will present a team developed project.
The main structure about the project will be discussed with the teacher and will focus some topics about territorial and environmental analysis.
Course unit contents: Ancient cartography and maps.
The cartographic process and problems about the generalization.
Image compression techniques: JPEG, JPEG200, quad tree.
The vector approach: geometrical entities, spaghetti model, whole polygon model, topological model.
L'approccio raster: resolution and precision, pixel, voxel.
Data analysis methods: classification, map overlay, buffer analysis.
Introduction to Data Base Management Systems: fields and tables, SQL language, semantic and structural incompatibilities.
