Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of thermodynamics (laws, inverse cycles, fluids), fluid dynamics, heat transfer and machinery.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a theory test with open questions.
Students must bring the laboratory report at the exam.
For those wishing to carry out the optional project, the project report must also be delivered at the exam.
Course unit contents: The vapor compression cycles: efficiency analysis and methods to reduce the losses.
The refrigerants: functional features, safety and environmental compatibility.
The refrigerant circuit of the vapor compression and its components:
-volumetric compressors (reciprocating and rotary of various types) and centrifugal compressors;
-air and water condensers;
-expansion devices (control level valves, thermostatic expansion valves, capillary tubes);
-flooded evaporators and dry expansion evaporators;
-control bodies, security devices and accessories.
Technology of two-stage plants.
Technology of heat pumps.
Refrigeration systems with CO2 as refrigerant: technology and applications.
Absorption refrigerating cycles.
Use of Refprop database (NIST) from Excel and Matlab.
