Examination methods: Written test and laboratory report.
I. The written test (83% of the final grade) includes both numerical exercises and theoretical questions. Exercises aim to assess the student skills in performing design and scale-up of the equipments processing granular solids. Questions aim instead at verifying the knowledge of the laws that regulate the behavior of solids.
II. The laboratory report (17% of the final grade) aims to corroborate learning through the practical and direct repetition of some topics explained at lesson. It also serves to verify communication skills in written English.
Course unit contents: I. CHARACTERIZATION: Materials of food and pharmaceutical industry: granular materials and powders. Properties and characterization of solid materials. Distributed properties. Solid-solid and solid-fluid interactions (flowability and wettability). Static analysis of stresses in solids, kinematics and dynamic analysis
II. PLANT DESIGN: design of silos and hoppers; flow function and flow factors; Mixing and segregation of solids; industrial mixers. Sampling. Wet granulation: agglomeration mechanisms; industrial granulators. Comminution: physical principles of size reduction and choice of milling devices; Crystallization: principles and design criteria. Mechanical separation operations; design of industrial screening.
