Course unit contents: Introduction to the class
The PV technology in the national and international contest.
The PV of first, second and third generation: affordability, costs and future perspectives.
Physics of solar cells: semiconductors properties, photovoltaic effect, PN junctiom recombination mechanisms of electron-hole couple,fundamentals of solar cell operation and modelling.
Main parameters of a solar cell: I-V curve, Filling factor, efficiency, spectral response.
The production chain of C-Si solar cells and its market.
Physical and chemical properties of silicon.
Polysilicon production: Siemens process, Union Carbide process, Elkem process.
UMG silicon production: costs, material properties, future perspectives.
Crystal growth processes: CZ and FZ for mono, DSS for multi.
Innovation in crystal growth: the quasi-mono casting process
Sqauring and wafering.
Production chain of C-si cells and modules.
Thinfilm production technologies: a:Si, CdTe, CIS and CIGS.
III-V solar cells with high efficiency
CPV – Concentration PV and the use of multijunction cells (brief introduction).
